The Door Bell
The Door-Bell Syndrome

Forgive me if I do not complete this article. For am suffering from an ailment called the door-bell syndrome, where I hear bells ringing even when they are not! I have this compulsive urge to get up and check if anyone is at the door. Sometimes, even the neighbors door-bell ringing makes want to get up and check. My visiting NRI friend told me that she was not surprised. Back home in the US, she says, we have quiet mornings and quieter nights with the twittering of birds in summer and the gurgling coffee pot. In India, we have door-bells that ring every half an hour. Here I write a typical day, and perhaps empathetic readers can suggest solutions. And of course in the first week of the month, add a handful more. For the money to be paid to all my indispensable friends is collected by a different set of folks. I have considered moving to a tree-house!

1. Ting-Tong : Milk man announcing he has left the packets of milk

2. Ting-Tong: Newspaperwallah dropping the morning papers – he didn’t want them to get wet you see, since it looked like its going to rain. Thoughtful guy!

3. Ting Tong: Newspaperwallah again. He missed his aim to the neighbor’s balcony. Could he please retrieve the paper?

4. Ting Tong: Maid No 1.

5. Ting Tong: Presswallah

6. Ting Tong: Maid’s friend to give her an important message

12. Ting Tong: My hubby. Forgot mobile before leaving for work.

13. Ting Tong: Bisleri to deliver the 20 litre mineral water jar

14. Ting Tong: Courier No 1 – Junk mail

15. Ting Tong: Courier No 2 – Relevant mail

16. Ting Tong: Kids back from school. Darn!

17. Ting Tong: Wrong bell. Fellow misread the house number. Had to go to the neighbors.

18. Ting Tong: Eureka Forbes. If didn’t have the water purifier could we buy it? If we had it, could he service it?!

19. Ting Tong: Kids friends.

20. Ting Tong: Electrician. Coming to repair the pump, tube-light, fan for the umpteenth time.

21. Ting Tong: Electrician’s flunky with the missing electrical part.

Re: The Door Bell

Superbly written!  I'm sure many of us identify with the doorbell syndrome. On a holiday or a Sunday, I've supposed to have deputed the doorbell duty to my sons. They are a smart enough to know that , if they wait long enough, their Mom's conditioned reflex will kick in and she'll respond to the doorbell.

Discuss the problem with any Banker who boasts of ECS facility and your problem is as good as solved!
