Web 3.0

Posted on behalf of chilli_writer

Can you believe it? The web is now getting version numbers. My husband, a software engineer, told me about this. Apparently what we browsed pre-dot-com crash was Web 1.0, the original web. Then, post-dot-com crash came Web 2.0, the current version which permits a certain amount of interaction, but is mostly like reading from a huge database. 3.0 is slated to be revolutionary (from our point of view, at least), permitting users to shop in 3D, dig through databases in milli-seconds and interact with each other and the web in ways never imagined before. it will be a "semantic" web which will be more sensory than anything we do so far.

This just got my mouth watering - can you imagine what it would do to content writing? If you can browse the aisles on an online store and virtually pick out your purchases, you may not need to read copy about the product - after all you can see it in 3D! While the demand for animators and graphics designers, not tohemention 3D artists, will increase, who will want to employ a writer? On the other hand, someone will have to write the scripts for the animations, plan the walkthroughs and even work on the help sections.

It just goes to show that as freelance writers, we cannot afford to neglect technology and the advances taking place around us. We must continuously re-invent ourselves to stay on top of the game. So, on to version N.o.1 for the 21st Century freelance writer!

You're right - we cannot afford to neglect technology, nor can we take for granted the way we work today. There is just so much happenning that sometimes its easy to settle in a routine and forget about the developments. Thanks for a fresh perspective!
